Comment by Diane Stafford on September 24, 2009 at 5:19pm: Hi Tony, Cold Porcelain has a hard finish - I've tested Katy Bucks (ahc member) recipe, which I found to be very strong compared to the water based recipe, it also has a much nicer finish (without or with acrylic colours added) I would say because of the 'cream' (I used Nivea) in the recipe

It is also quite light in weight and as you are leaving 4" from it and the bulb, I think it would be ideal - I doubt you would actually need to seal it, it is a perfectly good finish once dried.

You could experiment with adding different %'s of colour (acrylic paints) eg: white - until you get a bone china look.

Hope that helps, and please do ask Katy and some other members here who are cold porcelain 'experts'

(I'm the experimenter around here lol ;) )

and please do give us an update as you progress with your project...

I am working on a project for a new light fitting for my hallway, and I am taking inspiration from a high end designer one I have seen.
I've never worked with CP before and just wondered if you thought this would be a suitable medium ? Basically, I will be making lots of fairly small medallions/ ovals of CP and stringing them from a ring fitting.
Would you say that the CP will hold it's own weight ? is it hard enough once dry?
Should I be worried about heat from the light (I plan on having at least 4 inches between any CP and the bulb)?
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I would maintain a matt...bisquit type finish to the CP ? while still sealing it ?

I'm very confused at present.
Ideally I would use bone china, but I have no access to a kiln.

Any help you can offer would be gratefully received.

Comment by sana.v.b on September 1, 2009 at 5:05pm: hey jess.. which clay are u using..? i use ceramic n porcelain n if its 2 soft like sticking on ur finger then use cold cream to smoothin it up it doesnt stik then if thats wat u mean.. n all cooked dough from my xperience shrink da reason i think is that u cook it.. coz wen makin ceramic dough which is only made by hand it doesnt shrink...ya n dont use 2 much cream it gets quite slippery then...

Made my 1st batch of clay 2 days ago and let it sit. Started working with it tonight and I can already see a shrink issue with some of the roses I created. Any way to combat that?

I read that white paint added to it makes it opaque but how much white paint do I need to add to a batch?

Also this clay is so much softer than the store bought that I was using, just wondering if there is any way to firm it up a bit?

Yes you will find Katy Bucks - an expert cold porcelain artists - her flowers are wonderful. And several other members who are experts in CP modeling - there is just so much talent here and its great to welcome you and your expertise her to.

I'm sure with a little coaxing members will add more here :-)
