paper clay firing tips

If you are planning to play with paper clay and want to fire it but don't have a kiln then you can:

- locate a local craft/studio potter and ask if they will fire your pieces for you, usually for a small charge.

- contact your local school / college / university and ask them if they will fire your pieces for you, again they will usually do this for a small fee.

On the second option - a note of warning - make sure you can take your pieces in on firing day and check where they will be left before & after firing - school/college/university students (bless them) can't resist picking up pieces to have a good look (no can't just use our eyes can we) - so be aware that they could get a little 'man handled').

does paperclay have to be fired ?
can it just be polycoated to finish ?

Oh No - you have lost your bucket of clay!! hope you find it.

No it doesn't 'have' to be fired it can be varnished - ensure it is fully air dried first though then completely sealed with polycoat varnish - it won't be as robust as it would if it were fired - you can always fire it in a little pit fire in the garden, in a tin dustbin or similar - there is a pit firing video in the video section to show you how.

Looking forward to seeing your idea turned into reality - well done for giving it a go :>) Di
