The Art and Craft of Recycling to Create Something New

Do you recycle other resources in order to create your "new" art and craft items?

I'm asking because my friend Karen over at Pledging for Change is running an 'ethical business' competition which has kindly been donated by one of her members (Creatively Minded Design) - you can see the details here = Pledging for Change Ethical Competition

I'd love to enter Art Hobby Craft into the competition, which, if we were lucky enough to win, would benefit all Art Hobby Craft Members - as many of you I know DO recycle a variety of resources in your work.

Here's a video clip of Laura about her views on the environment which forms the basis for part of her A level art project:

Before I enter us for the competition, I'd love to hear what resources YOU recycle in your work.

So, can you please add a comment below, telling us what you recycle, why and what new art and craft item(s) you make with it.

Let's see how 'ethical' arts and crafts can be :-)

thanks
Diane

This art work by Alice Jose deserves a mention as a fabulous example of the art and craft of recycling.

Take a close look at the photo - it's made from "fish scales".

Danielle, your sea glass is a fantastic example of "one person's trash is another person's treasure" and what you do with it is create simply stunning jewelry that shows all its wonderful features off perfectly.

How lovely to have your Grandmothers collection to get you started making your jewelry.

I recycle sea glass (glass trash that has been tumbled by the ocean). I make jewelry with it. I have picked it up on the shorelines of New England since my youth. I thought the colors were beautiful and didn't want anyone to step on it. My grandmother and I collected together for years and she gave me our collection before she passed away. I always thought of these smoothed pieces of glass as gems and started making jewelry with them in 2005. I still hunt for sea glass and have recently started a group for New Englanders called the "North East Sea Glass Society". We share in the hunt for sea glass experience.

I've added a video of Laura's views on her 'ethical' project. She used waste paper and card to create the mountains and base.

The main resources I recycle are newspapers, junk mail, envelopes, discarded paper and card etc which would otherwise go into the domestic waste system. I manually process these and add to pottery clays to create my favorite 'paperclay'. Also used for papier mache crafts and for remaking into handmade papers.

What do you recycle?
