Carmen, when I was notified via email that you had posted some photographs, when I looked at them my immediate thought was well where is her interpretation in clay. I have read some of the comments and only then realised that the photographs were made out of clay. I am absolutely gobsmacked, you are a master at this craft and I really am humbled by just looking at the rest of your fantastic work. Hugs Joyce

Carmen,

The flowers are not made from cold porcelain .. they are made from soft clay ... Claycraft. I do not own or use any molds. Each petal is made in the palm of my hand.

Carmen,
Just was viewing some of your fired art. Love that series with the terra cotta heads - plaques and sculptures...looks like terra cotta, yes? Like the blue green patina dry brush with the clay color a lot.

Hi Carmen!
Thank you for all the lovely compliments on my flowers. I have just posted two more photos of recently completed orchids. I use Luna Clay for my flowers....and sometimes Thai Clay mixed in a 3-1 proportion. Base tinting and final coloration is with artist oil paints...I like Winton oils by Windsor Newton. I have tried other clays and also cold porcelain but think the results and finished product are the best you can acheive especially for flowers. Because the clay remains flexible after drying you can pose and reposition the petals and leaves and they a quite durable. The Luna clay I purchase from a place in California www.delicatecrafts.com. They have several different types of clay and are very helpfull - presently, they have a short artist profile and some photos of my flowers on their site as a featured artist. You can also get the clay from www.thaiflowerart.com. in the Netherlands-Hans and Tarapat are most gracious and have Luna, Thai and their brand new clay they have launched...Daisy Clay, which I am about to order and try. They also have a new Forum section on their site for clay flower artists...check it out. I just wrote to Joyce Dunshire Jones yesterday, who is in Australia about a place I found on the web www.pattyclayflowers.com. I believe their clay is of the Luna/Thai type and they are in Australia. Also for other supplies and cutters/veiners (lots) there is floralartandsugarcraft.com. (also in Australia). Hope all of this is of some assistance to you. if you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to write.
Keep up the wonderful work you do. Oh, and yes these male hands can be quite nimble especially after a lifetime in the arts and design. I have always been keen on detail and find delicate work quite a challenge...I'm six feet tall, so smaller hands would make things easier I suppose. Also, if you have a ceramic kiln, try some planters for your flowers. People are really surprised to find out you made that also besides the flowers. There are many ready made bisque pieces available these days and commercially made glazes are simple and easy to use. Happy to hear that my work has given you the motivation/inspiration to get started ASAP! Looking forward to seeing your new creations.
Warm regards,
Ron Gutman

Thank you Carmen for liking and admiring my work. I have made that stuff about five years back. Although we inspired by nature, but imaginations has no limits. I blended yellow and black oil colors to achieve olive green and its turned out nice.

Hi Carmen, thank you very much for the compliment. I always used LunaClay mixed with my own clay to get the best results. But now I have improved my recipe so far that I don't mix anymore and only use my own clay. This we will bring on the market as DaisyClay very soon. My husband and I work very hard to start our own business, ThaiflowerArt.com. We sell materials and eBooks for clay flower making and hope to be successful in this.

Hi Carmen, do you think it will be okay for us to bring it to Perth to you. I have a brother who goes to Perth at least once a year. Will he get into trouble with the custom. Yah, we could MSN each other as we are in the same time zone. Can you send me your MSN address so that I could add you in.
